The presentations at this site cover a long time period. Each one represents part of an on-going Pilgrimage, and the writer's ideas, practices, and experience have changed over time. This change is the quality of any living Journey. Please read with this in mind, allowing the inner Teacher to speak to you as you need at this particular time in your own living Journey. Thanks!

One cannot begin to face the real difficulties of the life of prayer and meditation unless one is first perfectly content to be a beginner and really experience himself as one who knows little or nothing and has a desperate need to learn the bare rudiments. Those who think they "know" from the beginning will never, in fact, come to know anything

*Thomas Merton. Contemplative Prayer.

Beginner's mind is Zen practice in action. It is the mind that is innocent of preconceptions and expectations, judgements and prejudices. Beginner's mind is just present to explore and observe and see "things as-it-is." I think of beginner's mind as the mind that faces life like a small child, full of curiosity and wonder and amazement. "I wonder what this is? I wonder what that is? I wonder what this means?" Without approaching things with a fixed point of view or a prior judgement, just asking "what is it?"

*Abbess Zenkei Blanche Hartman. "Beginner's Mind."

Living Prayerfully entails
innate, natural curiosity

This curiosity means
being receptive to Wonder

Wondering is
an opening to Wonderment

Each moment is
a potential moment of Revelation

Children enjoy asking questions
are receptive of Mystery
experience the Sacred in unsullied freshness

Prayerful Silence by yourself
is a sacred space to be quiet
and practice this curiosity
